July - Shark Month

(in honor of shark week 7/6-7/13)

Shark Week

When: July 14th Tue at 6pm

Spotting a white shark while diving along the California coast is still a rare thrill, but as ocean temperatures continue to shift, that could be changing. Join Anthony McGinnis Jr., a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, for a talk on his thesis research comparing how ocean temperatures shape juvenile white shark habitat use across two nursery zones: the established Southern California site and an emerging one in Monterey Bay. Using acoustic telemetry, drone footage, and environmental data, his work explores how a warming ocean could shift where these young sharks call home, potentially bringing them closer to local dive sites. Anthony's background spans shark research from Southern California to Costa Rica, and he serves on the board of the Aquatic Futures Foundation, which helps divers pursue AAUS scientific diving certification. Monastery Dive - Check Gear Before Channel Islands!

Where: Monastery Beach, Carmel (location may change based on conditions)
Monastery Beach is one of Monterey County's most iconic dive sites — dramatic walls, vibrant marine life, and the kind of underwater topography that makes every dive feel like an adventure. And hey, it's Shark Month, so we're officially on the lookout for sevengills, leopard sharks, and any other elasmobranchs that might be cruising by (though let's be honest, the real stars here are probably going to be the rockfish, nudibranchs, and kelp forests). Whether or not we spot a shark, you're guaranteed to see incredible marine life and explore one of the best shore dive sites on the Central Coast. Advanced certification required — just be comfortable with surf entries and a bit of a swim!

August/September - Photography Series

Underwater Photography Series: Gear Up, Dive In, Edit

Whether you're shooting with a GoPro, a fancy mirrorless setup, or have been eyeing that underwater housing for months, this month is all about capturing the beauty beneath the surface through photos and video. Each part builds on the last, but anyone is welcome to join for any or all of the sessions.

Part 1: In Person Gear Options & Set Up

When: August 11, Tue at 6 pm
Where: PSD dive shop
Get comfortable with the fundamentals of underwater camera systems: housings, strobes, and lighting. We'll cover what gear actually matters (and what's just nice to have), how to choose the right setup for your budget and dive style, and tips for prepping your camera before you hit the water. No camera required for this session. There'll be plenty of time afterward, before the organized club dive, to buy or rent a setup and try it out.

Part 2: Club Photo & Film Dive

When: August 29, Sat at 9 am*
Where: Breakwater, Monterey *subject to change due to condition
Put your new knowledge to the test! Join us for a relaxed dive focused on photography and video: slow pace, plenty of bottom time, and a chance to experiment with composition, lighting, and capturing the kelp forest in all its glory. All camera systems welcome, from phones in waterproof cases to full rigs.

Part 3: Editing Basics (Zoom)

When: September 8, Tue at 6pm
Where: Zoom
The magic doesn't stop when you surface. Join us for a walkthrough of the basic settings for editing underwater photos and video: color correction, backscatter removal, cropping, and how to make those greens and blues really pop. We'll talk through the key adjustments so you know what to reach for, and you can post your own before-and-afters in the Discord. We'll be joined by industry professional Matthew David Kaplan (@matthewunderwater).
